Suspension notes

  • All Escort models share the basic layout of McPherson front struts and independent rear suspension.
  • Suspension geometry was changed in May 1983. In front new top mounts for the struts were used, these can be identified from a single center bolt holding the top mount. Pre 5/83 models had two bolts holding the top mount to the body. At the rear shorter wishbones were used on Post 5/83 models in addition to other geometry changes.
  • Series 1 (1985) RS Turbos and RS1600i models used unique front suspension. These models had two longitudinally mounted tie bars with separate anti-roll bar. In RS1600i mounting brackets for the tie bars were made of aluminium, in the RST they ware cast iron. Tie bars were adjustable, so caster angle could be adjusted.
  • Front anti-roll bar diameter on carburettor models was 22mm, XR3i and Series 2 RS Turbo models had 24mm bar.
  • RS Turbo and Orion injection models had rear anti-roll bar as standard. Series 2 RS Turbo had a thicker 16mm bar, on Series 1 cars it was only 12mm.

    Engine and gearbox notes

  • All CVH engines are basically interchangeable with each other. So RS Turbo engine fits straight in place of a 1,3 litre CVH.
  • All gearboxes will fit to other engines, but if you are going to swap from 4-speed box to 5-speed you will run into clearance problems at the left hand side of the engine bay. You will also need drivesafts from a 5-speed model.
  • Fitting a fuel injection to a carburettor model means you have to change the fuel tank, install new fuel lines and fit wiring loom from injection model. The wiring of the K-Jetronic isn't very complicated, so if you have basic electrical knowledge it can be done yourself.
  • RS Turbos have a limited slip differential as standard. It can be fitted to other gearboxes as well or a complete gearbox from a RST can be fitted.
